June 18 appeal
While the French army was in the midst of a collapse, Charles de Gaulle, just promoted to general, went to London to ask for Churchill's military aid. When he learned that Marshal Pétain had just asked Hitler for the conditions of an armistice, he decided to launch an appeal for resistance. The man, who until then was only a character unknown to most French people, suddenly acquired respect worthy of a legendary figure.
