Colonel Chabert, one of Napoleon I's favorite officers, was officially declared dead at the battle of Eylau. Ten years later, in the period of the Restoration, he reappeared in Paris and demanded that his name, his fortune and his wife be restored to him. His wife, who had become the wife of Count Ferraud, had no intention of renewing her relationship with her former husband.
