Julien Sorel is charged with the attempted murder of Louise de Renal, wife of the mayor of Verrieres. While waiting for the verdict, Julien thinks about his past. He had been hired as a tutor to mayor's children, but having seduced his wife, Julien had to move away to cut short the town's gossip. He then became the latter's daughter lover. The disgraced father forced the two of them into marriage. But Mrs. Renal's letter of confession revealed the past affair...
