1919. In a little village sweltering in the summer heat in the Berry region of France, a dog howls day and night at a barrack’s gates. Inside is a single prisoner: the mutt’s master, a man named Morlac. In the countryside nearby, a young woman waits and hopes. She is exhausted by her labor in the fields, yet seems too well educated to be a farm worker. Morlac, a hero of the Great War decorated for bravery, is to be tried by an officer, Lantier du Grez, for crimes against the Republic. He faces the death penalty. The judge has just a few days to piece together the story of the accused and announce his sentence. So three characters and, among them, a dog… who holds the key to the mysterious affair.
